The banking sector embraces the entire society and the banking system in the nation consists of the nationalized commercial banks, private banks, regional rural banks and foreign banks. The career prospects are excellent for those with necessary skills .

Public sector banks have a wide reach in both urban and rural areas. Foreign and private banks mostly operate in urban areas. Regional rural banks place their officers in one particular state and movement is limited to that state. Foreign banks usually recruit people from campus interviews held in the premier business schools/ management institutes.

They also hire experienced personnel of apex financial institutions and public sector commercial banks.

Private banks recruit officer trainees from among first class graduates , management trainees from among MBAs and also recruit experienced personnel from the banking sector for middle and higher management positions.

The officer trainees are recruited to take care of the teller operation, processing of loan applications etc. The nationalized commercial banks and the regional banks induct officers through a written examination followed by interview of successful candidates.

Graduates are eligible to appear for the examination. The written examination ( Probationary officers's examination) is both objective and descriptive in nature.

The probationary officer is trained on all aspects of banking operation such as cash management, loan approvals, foreign exchange , investment , pension and insurance schemes etc. Aspiring bankers are expected to be familiar with the operating computer system in DOS and windows , knowledge of word processing and spread sheet software like MS word, MS excel etc. The work areas of bank officer depends upon their area of interest.
