Tourism as a subject could be offered at the undergraduate level as also in vocational colleges in the country. Polytechnics also offer training programmes in certain aspects of tourism and travel, for example ticketing and conservation. This level of qualification leads to jobs in travel agencies , as well as in government departments, airlines and hotels but does not offer prospects for much growth and promotion in the industry. The most professional training in travel and tourism is available in the form of the post graduate diploma and degree programmes provided by many universities and institutes in the country. These programmes are usually open to graduates in any discipline . Familiarity with Indian history and culture and knowledge of foreign languages are desirable and proficiency in English is essential. IATA's international travel and tourism training is designed to give you the skills and knowledge to maximize career opportunities in this rapidly expanding industry. From entry level travel agents basic to senior management for agencies or tour operations , each course leads to an IATA qualification, recognized internationally by the travel industry. The tourism industry is a service industry with work opportunities in both the public and private sectors. Travel and tourism management is the ideal qualification for managerial positions in the travel and tourism industry.
