Hi

The very common myth about psychologist are that they are "Face readers". They can see face and tell what is going on with them. Its not true. Nor psychologist read minds. Many people believe that psychology is just common sense. Many other people feel that psychologist treat only mentally challenged people.

Some do feel that the counselors, psychologist and psychtrist are same.
Counselors -{as seen in many schools, for example) is not necessarily a psychologist. Psychologist work is to treat clients with counseling and therapies. Psychiatrists are basically medical doctors who are trained and certified to prescribe drugs to deal with mental health problems-and they don't usually perform counseling.

Many people get the impression that anyone who works in psychology spends most of their time talking to crazy people-and that most of this talking involves some form of therapy, usually centered on dreams. But this a fundamental misconception: for starters, there are a huge number of fields in psychology that don't involve talking to crazy people at all-and most psychologists work in these fields.

Psychology is a science.Psychology can be broadly defined as the study of the human mind and behavior. It is a systematic approach to the understanding of people, their thoughts, emotions and behavior. The application of this understanding helps to solve human problems.

Psychologists explore concepts such as perception, cognition, attention, emotion, phenomenology, motivation, brain functioning, personality, behavior, and interpersonal relationships.

Psychologists analyze different intentions, reactions and feelings of the mankind. Their cure and counseling is aimed at altering the behavioral patterns of the patients to initiate re-adjustment of their thought process which in turn, improves the overall quality of their lives.

Hope this answers your question

All the best

There are a number of myths about the psychologists and their work which have been mentioned and explained below:

1. Many people confuse the roles of the psychologists with psychiatrists. A psychiatrist psycho analyzes the human mind and cure it while the psychologists rely on the study of psychology and its practice to serve and provide their contribution. Psychiatrists are usually required to work on curing the people who have issues in their mental health. They are largely different from psychologists who are expert in psychology and not psychiatry.

2. Psychologists are often considered as mind readers and as professionals who read facial expressions to derive their results. This is not true at all. They rely on their studies and theories in order to derive their conclusions and do not read the minds of the people. Mind reading is not a part of psychologist's work and they are usually not trained on this.

3. It is also believed that psychologists are restricted to the offices and do not get to experience the life outside the cabins and their offices. This again is not true at all. The psychologists have to go out and meet their clients so that they can work on their cases. They also attend a number of seinars and other events where they get a chance to interact with other people in this profession. Psychologists also give guest lectures in certain academic institutions and therefore widen their network.

4. Many people think that psychologists are only restricted to the academic world and health sector and there are no job opportunities for them in the corporate world. That again is a big myth. A number of companies these days hire psychologists to take care of their employees and provide them psychological support at work. These jobs are increasing day by day. In India this trend is still picking up and will take a while before the jobs become vastly available.

Therefore there are a number of myths that people have about the work of the psychologists.
