Psychiatrists diagnose , treat and prevent human mental , emotional and behavioral disorders. They treat patients with mild cases of anxiety as well as those with severe disorders that can cause dangerous and bizarre behavior. They also diagnose mental retardation and treat drug abuse and alcoholism. Psychiatrists talk with patients to understand about their mental health problems. They review and organize data concerning the patient's family, medical history and onset of symptoms and examine the patient to determine the general physical condition.using special diagnostic tests. After understanding the nature and severity of the mental disorder, they formulate an appropriate treatment plan through application of variety of chemotherapeutic methods and medications. They work in collaboration with psychologists, occupational therapists and social workers for the rehabilitation of their patients. The rising incidence of suicides and problems like absenteeism and alcoholism in the corporate sector coupled with illness arising out of high stress jobs are increasing the demand for psychiatrists.

Below is the list of the key things on which a psychiatrist works most of the times:

1. The psychiatrists working in the health sectors often associate themselves with the hospitals and clinics. There they work in the diagnosis, cure and treatment of the psychological disorders and therefore spend most of their times with the patients. They need to attend a number of cases so that they can provide as much contribution as possible. Those who are working independently or have their own clinic also meet the patients and cure them as per their timings.

2. The psychiatrists interact a lot with their patients and also with the close friends and the relatives of the patients so that they can gather more information about that person. It is important to understand the background of an individual before working on the cure or providing behavioral assistance to that person. The more information they are able to fetch, the better state they are in to treat that person and therefore getting more information is very important.

3. The psychiatrists spend a lot of time learning and reading about their field. Since this field requires constant learning and the updation of the information based on the latest research and studies, they have to be aware about all of that. Therefore they need to educate themselves all the time so that they are in a better position to treat their patients.

4. The psychiatrists work in a number of industries in the corporate world to cure the employees who are suffering from stress, emotional and behavioral disorders. The companies and the organizations are extremely concerned about their employees and therefore they stay in touch with the psychiatrists so that they can cure the employees at right times.

5. They also spend lot of time in doing their research work to bring innovation in this field.

Therefore the psychiatrists work on a number of activities and experience diverse kinds of work in their profession. Thus they need to work on these areas so that they can build the expertsie and provide a valuable contribution in this field.
