The physician diagnose and treat diseases and injuries and perform a vital role in physical well being of people. They take into account the medical history of specific cases of illness or problems mentioned by the patient together with information regrading his/her previous illnesses and any illness of relatives. They keep the patient under close supervision during the course of treatment, perform regular check ups and examine the patient's physical condition using various clinical skills and order or perform laboratory tests, X-rays and other diagnostic procedures; assess the findings and make a diagnosis. Based on their findings they recommend suitabletreatmentto the patient which may involve recommendations on life style changes prescribing medicines or giving medication, vaccinating against infections or contagious diseases or in the case of injuries or otherwise closing wounds , removing foreign bodies or fixing broken limbs. They are also responsible for providing prenatal care to pregnant women, deliveringbabiesand providing postnatal care to mother and infant. Theyalsoconduct physical examinations to provide information needed for admission to school, consideration for jobs or eligibility for insurance coverage. Their job also involves counseling patient on diet, exercise, avoidance of habits such as smoking and consumption of alcohol and overall healthmaintenance.
