Below are the main work and responsibilities of a technical writer:

  1. A technical writer has to meet the clients and gather the requirements. The meetings are set for this purpose where the client writer interaction takes place. During these meetings, they have to understand the project well and get the necessary information from the clients.

  2. After the discussions with clients, the technical writers have to work with their team and the management in planning and scheduling the project. The various tasks are assigned to different people in these meetings. In this case the technical writers have to ensure that they will meet the deadlines as per the plan and there won't be any delay in the project.

  3. Then starts the main work of the technical writers - to write. The writing is done carefully as there are many technicalities involved in this kind of work. They need to clearly understand the concepts and functionality behind every thing that they are writing and therefore make the writing contribution in the most effective manner. They also have to ensure that the writing is done in a simple manner so that it doesn't cause any problem to the reader. For that purpose they have to consider reader's requirements in mind and understand the reader's psyche well.

  4. Once the writing is done, or in a stage of completion, the technical writers have to get the approval of the senior management or the clients and convince them that the writing is done effectively and the project has been a successful one. It's only the client who can decide that and therefore once can never be sure about how many changes they may have to do even after the initial work.

  5. The technical writers have to maintain the records and details of all the information regarding their work and the project. They also need to keep a track of the number of hours they have worked on and how many words they have written which is often the criteria for payment.

This documentation includes online help, user guides/manuals, white papers, design specifications, system manuals, project plans, test plans, business correspondence, etc. Technical writer create documentation in many forms such as printed, web-based or other electronic means.

Engineers, Scientists and other professionals may also produce technical writing, but often hand it off to a professional technical writer for developmental editing, proofreading, editing and formatting.

Skills Sets:
In addition to solid research, language, writing and revision skills a technical writer may have skills in:

3. Training Material Development
4. Illustration / Graphic Design
5. Website Design Management.

7. Localization / Technical Translation

A Technical Writer may apply their skills in the production of non-technical content, for example, writing high-level consumer information.

Career Growth:

There is not necessarily one standard career path for technical writers, but they may move into project management over other writers. A writer may advance to senior technical writer position, handling complex projects, or a small team of writers and editors. In large groups, a documentation manager might handle multiple projects ad teams.

Technical Writer may also gain expertise in a particular technical domain ad branch into related forms, suschas software quality analysis or business analysis. A Technical writer who becomes a subject matter expert in a field may translation from technical writing to work in that field.

Technical writers with expertise in writing skills can join printed media, electronic media companies, potentially providing an opportunity to make more money and /or improved working conditions.

The responsibilities includes:
1. Research, write, edit and proofread complex technical data.
2. Create, Maintain and update manuals, procedures, specifications, and other documents
3. Create, Maintain and update installation instructions, training material and other technical documents.
4. Design and establish style guidelines, and standards for texts and illustrations to meet business needs.
5. Create, compile and deliver software developmental documentation packages.
6. Review, Revise, Modify or edit documents prepared by others.
7. Coordinate project plans, budget and determine resources.
8. Compile, organize and write online help files to support end-users.
9. Write technical documents in compliance to company's established standards and guidelines.
10. Evaluate and recommend revisions to standards and guide lines.
11. Provide writing, editing, and design support to other team members.
