The viability of manufacturing living tissue structures on a customized 3D printer was demonstrated by bioengineers.

Bioactive cells that are placed under controlled circumstances on biodegradable scaffolds can be used to create living tissue. Bioprinting is a popular deposition technique; it is very similar to 3D printing but uses "bioinks" made of human cells rather than plastic.

The cells are printed in tiny layers that combine to form implantable bodily components or living tissue. Using a specialized 3D printer, scientists at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine have developed tissues that flourish when implanted in rats.
