The designer's job always involves a variety of responsibilities which differs according to the size and type of employing organizations.



Certain designers spend most of their time actually creating and sketching brand new ideas, styles and trends. Some of them major specialize in designs which are an amalgamation of ideas from various sources.



They use their creative ability combined with technical expertise to incorporate fashion trends and their firm's special style / feature into the type of garments which sell best in a given type of market within a given price range. Some fashion fashion do their own pattern cutting.



Other work involves making detailed working drawings of one's own or someone else designs, cutting sample garments, draping them and pinning them up on a dress stand or a model and making the necessary adjustments to improve appearance or facilitate manufacture.



Designers must understand and be able to use the production process and equipment and also be familiar with production management principles.





Fashion coordinating, Fashion coordinating, fashion forecasting and marketing of apparels and accessories are the other major functions performed by fashion designers. Those with a flair for writing join fashion magazines etc as writers and editors.

1. To be creative
2. An eye for color, texture and pattern
3. The ability to visualize things in three dimensions
4. Technical skills in areas such as pattern cutting, grading and garment construction
5. To be able to draw, either by hand or on the computer.
6. Good communiaction skills to explain their ideas clearly and persuasively.
7. The ability to meet deadlines and work within a budget.
8. Business skills and commercial awareness, particularly if they are self-employed
9. Good negotiation skills when selling their own designs.
10. To keep ahead of trends in colour, fabric and style.
11. Strong organizational skills.


Job Roles:
As a professional fashion designer, you can work in areas like designer wear production, fashion marketing, panning and concept management. Then there is fashion media, design production management, fashion accessory design, quality control and promotion of brands.

You can also work a designated costume designer, fashion consultant, personal stylist, technical designer, graphic designer, production pattern maker, or a fashion coordinator.

other roles includes: apparel production manager, fabric buyer, fabric quality control manager, showroom sales representative, illustrator, cutting assistant, and outside sales representative. Those interested in a career in fashion designing can also become entrepreneurs and form their own companies.
