Everything we see and use is made of materials : cars, airplanes, computers , refrigerators, microwave ovens, TVs, dishes , silverware, athletic equipment of all types, DVDs and bio medical devices such as replacement joints and limbs. All of these require materials specifically tailored for their application. Specific properties are required that results from carefully selecting the materials and from controlling the manufacturing processes used to convert the basic materials into the final engineered product. Exciting new product developments frequently are possible only through new materials. The material science engineers deal with the science and technology of producing materials that have properties and shapes suitable for practical use
. They conduct research into the structures and properties of materials such as alloys, metals , polymers and ceramics in order to obtain information that could be used to develop new products or enhance existing ones. They plan laboratory experiments to confirm feasibility of processes and techniques used in the production of materials having special characteristics. They recommend materials for reliable performance in various environments. They test individual parts and products to ensure that manufacturing quality and safety standards are met. They determine ways to strengthen or combine materials or develop new materials with new or specific properties for use in variety of products and applications.They devise testing methods to evaluate the effects of various conditions on particular materials. They research methods of processing, forming and firing materials to develop such products as ceramic dental fillings, unbreakable dinner plates and telescope lenses. They monitor production processes in order to ensure that equipment is used efficiently and that projects are completed within appropriate times frames and budgets. Whenever a company or engineering firm is working on anew experiment, a material scientist or a material engineer is usually consulted. They are typically experts in one area of materials and are familiar with past experiments and theories relating to the hiring firm's proposed project.
