Psychiatry is one of the most interesting , challenging and rewarding branch of medicine.In order pursue a career as psychiatrist one needs to be a post graduate in psychiatry

. Doctors who have completed the MBBS programmecan pursue psychiatry. There are two options -they may either do a post graduate course ( MD) in psychiatry or a diploma in psychiatry ( DPM). The duration of course is three years while the diploma course is of two years. Besides the MD and the DPM,, there is a third option for study. The National Board of Examination offers Diploma if National Board Examination. The DNB is considered equivalent to MD degree. There are number of specializations within this field such as child&adolescent psychiatry, neuro psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, rehabilitation and social psychiatry, old age psychiatry . Psychiatrists deals with the mental , emotional and behavioral disorders in a person. Treatments usually involves counseling and medications. Too begin with psychiatrists diagnose and then follow it up with treatment be it medication, counseling, psychotherapy or electrotherapy, They work in collaboration with occupationaltherapists and social workers for the rehabilitation of patients. Psychiatrist can work with hospitals, nursing homes, health centres, medical colleges and research institutions. They can also start private practice by opening their own clinics.
