An undergraduate degree or diploma course in hotel management is the minimum eligibility criteria for making a career in hotel industry. The syllabus of undergraduate and diploma course covers administration and organization of the industry, , personnel and organizational behaviour, knowledge of a foreign language , economics, principles of management , applied science , front office operations, relevant and general aspects of tourism and hotel business, food and beverage service, staff management and organization, housekeeping , basics of cookery covering Indian, continental, Chinese , french , Mexican and other varieties of cuisine, accounts and bookkeeping ,sales and marketing etc.



The National Council-for Hotel Management & Catering Technology & Indira Gandhi National Open University , New Delhi offers the three years BSc in hospitality and hotel administration at Institutes of Hotel Management located across the country. The major private hotel chains - Oberoi, Taj , Apeejay, Kohinoor, Welcome group, Jaypee etc have also set up their own schools of hotel management..



Hotel management institutes in the private sector conduct separate admission tests, group discussions and interviews as part of the selection process. Hotel management courses at all institutes offer a blend of theoretical and practical training. Students are given hands on training in the running of a hotel so that they can apply their theoretical learnings to real life situations and learn how to improvise and adapt.



Girls and boys educated up to class 10 may take up short duration courses e.g. certificate courses in cookery, bar tending and craftsmanship courses in food production and patisserie, food and beverage service and short job oriented hospitality courses by the ministry of tourism in food and beverage and food production.



The hotel management graduates can work for hotel chains, industrial canteens, hospitals, BPOs, public relations agencies , travel and tourism agencies etc. Many experienced professionals set up their own catering and hospitality establishments after certain years of experience.
