An ophthalmologist is a medically trained doctor who commonly acts as both physician and surgeon. S/he examines , diagnoses and treats diseases and injuries in and around the eye.There are postgraduate degrees ( MD and MS) and two years post graduate diploma programmes available in ophthalmology to MBBS graduates . Admission into these courses are offered by medical colleges run by the Union and State governments are made through an All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination.
An ophthalmologist can join medical college as junior doctor or senior resident. Central and state governments recruit ophthalmologists for hospitals run by them. Departmental hospitals run by Railways and Defense and hospitals run by PSU are also good options available to ophthalmologists..They can join subspeciality training in a reputed eye centers,. Subspeciality completion provides an opportunity to practice as a consultant in various hospitals. They can go for fellowship or job in another country
. They can start their own eye hospitals and join a small private set up with private practice .
