To become a psychiatrist , after completing the MBBS degree one can go for a post graduate degree (MD) or diploma in psychiatry.The MD course is of three years duration while the duration of diploma course is two years. Apart from these courses one can also join the DNB course organized by the National Board of Examination which is equivalent to an MD. Entry into post graduate courses is on the basis of all India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination. Apart from educational qualification , a good psychiatrist must be emotionally stable and have an excellent ability to listen. S/he should have empathy and good observation.S/he should have keen interest in understanding the various dynamics of human behavior, , genuine concern and sympathy for patients, preservernce, patience and an objective approach for understanding the problems of patient are also required.

Psychiatrist can find employment with regular hospitals, poly clinics as well as mental hospitals. They can also work with rehabilitation centers to rehabilitate drug-addicts, alcoholics, juvenile delinquents and others in collaboration with occupational therapists and social workers. They are also recruited in private hospitals, neuro psychiatric hospitals and mental health institutes. They can also start their private practice or may join large scale industries as counsellor. Those with a teaching and research aptitude can take up teaching as profession
