My Dear Corporate Lawyer Aspirant,

Thanks for approaching CareerGuide.com for seeking clarification on your query. I would say that your query is very much different than the general queries I have been receiving for years now about law. Many students ask me how to become a lawyer or what are the educational qualifications one must have to become a lawyer or advocate etc. There fore I compliment you for raising such different and yet very important query about skills required to become a Corporate Lawyer. I will very glad to clarify your query.

As an Educationist and have been counselling many students for more than seven years now on diverse career fields like law / finance / management / engineering, etc. law students have asked me many queries for their career. I am also an author and have also been into teaching for some years now and so very close to the students of law as well.

Educational Qualifications:

I take it granted that you already know what educational qualifications are required to become a lawyer first. Still in one line I would tell that a person requires to get the LLB degree from a recognised University and from a college which is approved by Bar Council of India (BCI). After LLB degree, only a person becomes eligible to apply for license to work as a lawyer or advocate for a corporate or a firm or individually.

Skills required for becoming a corporate lawyer:

Since you have asked specifically about Corporate Lawyer, I suppose that you are interested in working with companies and be their advocate or lawyer or a legal consultant.

Generally, a lawyer should be a master of his chosen specialisation like civil, criminal, family law, etc. Domain mastery is the key skill I would say which is very very necessary and important without which a lawyer cannot be successful.

Skills required for becoming a corporate lawyer are as below:

  • Very good domain expertise

  • Very good verbal and non verbal communication

  • Very good oratary skills

  • Very good negotiation skills

  • Very good logical reasoning skill

  • Very good analytical skills

  • Very good interpretation skill

  • Very good grasping skill

  • Very good listening skill

  • Very good drafting skill

  • Very good positive attitude

The above skills are regarded as a must have skills for any person into the legal profession and there fore also applies to Lawyer or Advocate.

I hope the above clarifies your query.

Best Luck!
