Fashion designing is one of the most lucrative , appealing, glamorous and exciting career option. Fashion designers understand the needs of their clients, create attractive and functional garments and accessories according to the latest trends, market conditions, weather conditions and also keeping a close watch on the fit , style, color, texture, size and material.



The process of making a dress starts with sketching the original idea on paper and then shaping the pattern pieces, which makes the garment. The pieces are then drawn in actual size on paper and cut out on a rough material. These pieces are stitched together and fitted on a model.



From the rough model, sample garments are made in the final fabric. The main departments in the fashion industry include design department, marketing and merchandising department , manufacturing department and fashion coordinating department.






To excel in this profession one must possess the ability to be original and creative and love to make people good. Further she must be creative enough to combine colors, shades and textures and express her ideas through sketches.



She/he must be able to visualize new design, patterns, garments and accessories and enjoy working with fabrics and accessories. Designer must have the flair for using textiles effectively. Designers need to visual imagination and the ability to think in three dimension to translate what they visualize into real garments.

On one hand, fashion industry satisfies both the creative fancies and the materialistic needs of the people. On the other hand, it promises glamour, fame, success and high pay package to the talented people.

However, it is also a demanding career, as fashion designers need to combine their creativity with managerial skills to sustain in this industry. Thus, if you can create magic with colours, shapes and designs, then just obtain a professional course to begin a successful career in the alluring world of fashion designing.


Required Skills and Personal Qualities:
Fashion designer needs to have following skills:
1. To be creative
2. An eye for colour, texture and pattern
3. the ability to visualize things in three dimensions
4. Technical skills in areas such as pattern cutting, grading, and garment construction
5. To be able to drwa, wither by hand or on the computer
6. Good communication skills to explain their ideas clearly and persuasively.
7. The ability to meet deadlines and work within a budget.
8. Business skills and commercial awareness, particularly, if they are self-employed
9. Good negoiation skills when selling theirr own designs
10. To keep ahead of trends in colour, fabric and style.
11. Strong organizational skills.


Job Prospects:
In India, the fashion industry has just begun to come of age, as it is still in its fledgling stage. This industry offers plenty of opportunities for talented hard working and enthusiastic people. Prospects or fashion design graduates are pretty good thanks to the huge and still growing demand for "Designer Wear" and the equally outsized quantity of exports.

After successful completion of the course, you can remain self employed. Alternatively, severa; export houses, garment store chains, textile mills, leather companies, boutiques, fasion show organizers, jewellery houses and media houses recruit professionals interested in a career in fashion designing.
