Hello My Dear Law Aspirant,

I am glad that you came up with your query to a perfect forum of CareerGuide.com. I am sure that the experts here will be able to clarify you in the best possible way.

I am an Educationist and have been counselling many students from diverse areas like law / finance / banking / commerce / management / engineering, etc for more than seven years now. I am also an author and also into teaching for some years now.

Reading your query, till now many students have asked me about the field of law and how to get into it with what educational qualifications etc. but your query is really different since it speaks about the 'skills' required to become a lawyer. Here I would take it as a 'good lawyer'. I there fore compliment you for raising this query.

Educational qualifications:

I take it granted that you already know the educational qualifications that are required to become a lawyer. Still in one sentence I would tell that LLB from a recognised college affiliated to a University and the college approved by the Bar Council of India (BCI).

Skills to become a Lawyer:

Lawyer as you may be knowing that is a professional highly into a public domain of work and involves lots of people. Also the work involves numerous paper work.
Lawyers in India are actually over burdened with cases from people and corporates and there fore they need many assistants to help them prepare the background work and investigation.
Further since the legal complications are also very high level, they are also required to remain updated about latest amendments to the laws.

Based on the above below are the necessary skills which are required to become a 'good lawyer':

  • Very good listening skills
  • Very good grasping skills
  • Very good organisation skills
  • Very good discipline
  • Very good flexibility in terms of work hours
  • Very good people skills
  • Very good level of patience
  • Very good level of communication
  • Very good drafting skills
  • Very good oratary
  • Very good Analytical skills
  • Attention to details
  • Logical reasoning
  • Persuasiveness
  • Sound judgement

The above skills are regarded as the must have skills for a lawyer / advocate.

Apart from the above skills in terms of their work, as a person also they need to be very polite, helpful and above all should have the humanity and sympathy towards a genuine case and persons.

Best Luck
