Psychiatrists are physicians who specialize in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders
. They treat patients with mild cases of anxiety as well as those with severe disorders that can cause bizarre and dangerous behaviour. They often work in collaboration with other mental health workers. They talk to patients to learn about their mental health problems. hey also take into consideration the information provided by patient's family or by other professionals to plan a treatment which usually involves medication and psychotherapy. In psychotherapy, psychiatrists use their special training to talk with patient to make him or her understand and cope with their problem. psychiatrist may work with regular hospitals, poly clinics , mental hospitals or neuro psychiatric centers, They can also get associated with rehabilitation centers to rehabilitate drug addicts, alcoholics , juvenile delinquents etc. They need to have a post graduate degree in psychiatry to puruse this profession. A good psychiatrist must be emotionally stable and have excellent ability to listen. He should have keen interest to study and understand human behaviour, genuine concern and sympathy for patients, immense patience and preservernce coupled with an objective approach for understanding their problems are also required. Those interested in getting into research must have strong aptitude for research and long concentration span.

There are a number of skills that a psychiatrist needs to have. Below is the list of those skills that would be of great help for them in this profession:


1. The psychiatrists are physicians who work in the field of psychiatry. Thus they really need to be good at understanding the various concepts of psychiatry so that they can be effective in this profession. This is the core part of their work and they should be able to do it with great conviction.

2. The psychiatrists need to have the clear understanding about the various medicines and the medical procedures that could help in the treatment of their patients. They have to have the knowledge of all these machines and equipment which can be used for the treatment.

3. They have to interact with their patients all the time. And not only patients but a number of other people like the relatives and the close friends of the patient so that they can understand their patient well with the help of all the information that they have gathered. Therefore they need to be good at their social and interpersonal skills. They should be able to enjoy the social interactions. It is important on their part that whoever they interact with, they should make that person comfortable enough so that he or she can share all the information comfortably. Thus they need to work on this aspect.

4. The psychiatrists need to have the excellent communication skills. It is important that they are able to communicate well with their patients and also other people whom they interact with. They should be able to convey their message clearly and precisely. Apart from that they are supposed to make a number of other communications through wriiten form of communication and therefore need to work on that part as well.


Therefore the psychiatrists require a number of skills in order to excel in their profession. They need to work on these skills so that they can provide their best contribution in this field.
