Below is the list of the skills that you will be required to have if you want to work as an editor:

1. You need to be extremely accurate about the usage of language and the various technicalities involved in it. You cannot afford to lack the core understanding and knowledge of the literature. You should be knowing all the literature concepts thoroughly. That way only you can become an effective contributor as an editor.

2. As an Editor it is utmost important that you are right on target when it comes to grammar. Grammar dictates the fundamental technical part associated in the writing. It is editor's responsibility to correct the grammatical mistakes and make sure there are not any. Thus you have to learn all the concepts of grammar if you really want to become a good editor.

3. You will have to be extremely good at your communication skills. Of course as an editor you will be good with your written skills but you also need to work on other modes of communication and even the non verbal ones. When you meet a writer you need to make good impression on him or her otherwise they might not get confidence in you.

4. You have to be a very good team player. Remember that editing process is not an individual process but a number of other parties are involved as well - publishers, writers, sales and marketing teams. Therefore you need to work in a collaborative manner so that the work can be produced of the highest quality.

5. An editor has to maintain warm relationships in the professional world. A lot depends on how well they manage their contacts and get the assignments and also the acknowledgement for their work. They need to be well known in the industry and have that respect.

6. As an editor you will have to meet the deadlines so often. Thus your time management skills will be very important as there won't be any excuses for not meeting the deadlines.
