Hello,

Thank you for contacting Mera Careerguide.com

Apart from our academic skills, A Psychiatrist must possess few other Interpersonal skills as well.

Psychiatrist

Below are few of my suggestions:

What are the skills of a Psychiatrist?

  • To become a Psychiatrist, a student must complete four yeas of college, Four years of medical school and three or more years of internship and residency. Yet, Medical knowledge is just one of the skills a good Psychaitrist needs.

  • He must be able to communicate effectively n many levels with many different people, Know when to question and how to pull it all together to derive a diagnoses and appropriate treatment plan for various mental disorders.

1. Excellent Diagnostic skills

  • Psychiatrist must be able to analyze a patient's comments, symptoms and test results against the vast of knowledge he gained in medical school to arrive art a diagnosis and treatment plan.

  • This requires not only a great deal of information recall but also the ability to reason, priortise and group responses to derive individual solutions. Understanding human biology, Psychology, group and individual social behavior and cultural differences all play a part in his ability to accurately diagnose the patient's illness.

2. Good Listening Skills

  • A Psychiatrist must be an avid and capable listener to hear both what the patient says and discern what is not sais. you need topay attention to the intonation and expression the patient uses when discussing different issues and to be alert to repetitive comments that may indicate strong feelings.

  • It's important too that the psychiatrist to be able to set aside his preconceptions and be open to what each patient is saying and hoe one patient differs from another. you should be an active listener who listens without interuppting but knows when to ask appropriate questions.

3. Ability to communicate well

  • A Psychiatrist needs to be able to communicate with many people in addition to the patient. You may talk to the family members to get other perspectives on the patient's problems and to assess family dynamics. He often must talk with other health care professional to cordinate a treatment plan for the patient.
  • A Psychiatrist must be to explain specific medical trminology to other medical professionals as well as to lay people who may have limited medical knowledge. He takes notes throughout these various conversations and places comments in the patients file for future, so as good command of both oral and written language is essential.

4. Empathy without internalizing

To be effective, a Psychiatrist must care about his patients and have empathy of their problems. while he may not have personally experienced similar problems himself/herself. He needs to be able to understand them to analyze them and to determins treatment plans. Yet, Listening to other people's problems can be stressful. The Psychiatrist must be able to detach himself enuogh to avoid talking on patient's stress and emotional upheavel.

5. Humility

Personal Humililty on the part of psychiatrist would be reflected in how he approaches patient with the constant awareness that the patient, even in the worst phases of mental illness is an equal to him as a human beign. That but for an accident of birth in a family with different genetic risks and different social, economic or cultural background he could very well be suffering from any of the illnesses that afflict his patients.

6. Willing ness to spend time educating patient and Family about diagnosis and receommended treatments

Hope these above suggested skills will help you as a Psychiatrist to assit your patients.
