Footwear industry is largely divided into three segments i.e. manufacturing, designing and marketing. Designers handle the creative part of the job that is designing styles and patterns.

They are hired as technical designers who have formal training in shoe patter making, cutting, designing and sample preparation or as stylist designers.

They have to be aware of the international fashion trends and have the ability to conceptualize a sale-able product.

The retail sector holds a promising future for the professionals trained in this field. Footwear designers need to have a creative eye and a flair for color, texture and patterns.

They need to have knowledge of foot anatomy. They are expected to have exceptional good drawing ability and CAD skills.

They are keen to have excellent communication skills and keen interest in fashion, design and textiles. A footwear designer can work for fashion houses, footwear brands supplying high street shoes, export houses, catalog companies, specialist manufacturers of leisure and sportswear s well as with footwear retailers.

They can also work with the manufacturers of hand bags and lifestyle accessories. Visual merchandising has also emerged as a promising career option in the rapidly growing industry.

After gaining certain years of experience one can also earn handsomely or can join any leading brands and go up in the ladder and reach top position in the company.
