The interior decorator advises, chooses and then assembles the choice of furniture and furnishings and color schemes , but does not actually design.

Interior decorators may advise customers or clients on the choice of items needed to furnish a room, office , home and suggest color schemes , matching wall papers and curtains, sketching plans for room decoration or advising on suitable fabrics or fixtures for specific furnishing purposes.

Planning an interior whether of a shop, a house, an office , a hotel, a ship or theater requires careful research before actual designing can be started. The interior designer find out all details which are to be incorporated into the interior before designing. suitable light fittings, heating equipment, plumbing fittings etc have to be identified and located. While designing interiors, the designer has to keep in mind, the function, utility , anesthetic appeal and economic viability factors of their design. Interior designers should be aware of the different types of material available in the market so as to be able to use the right type of material to the best advantage. Interior decorators needs artistic sense, creativity, imagination, color sensitivity, manual dexterity and the ability to get along with people.

Interior designers can work with architectural firms, construction houses, design consultant's firms, group of hotels, airline companies, shipping companies or a chain of departmental stores.
