An instrumentation engineer is responsible for designing, developing ,installing , managing and maintaining instruments which is used to monitor and control engineering systems. They are responsible for managing operation, work in collaboration with design engineers to develop new and improved systems

. They are responsible for devising ways to control processes using automation techniques and computers, examining the safety aspects of the planned tasks, overseeing the testing of new systems and correction of faults and supervising the installation and maintenance of systems and equipment in heavy industry such as thermal power stations, steel plants, refineries, cement and fertilizer plants, pulp and paper industry, engineering firms , petrochemical plants, mining industry, oil refineries, gas plants or consulting firms. They can find placement in :-

Government sectors including the railways, municipal corporations, telecommunication departments
Public Sector organizations
Private companies
Commissioned officer in the defense services
Research organizations and laboratories
Technical expert on engineering projects in banks and financial corporations
An engineer can set up his own consultancy firm
