There are quite a few things that a technical writer needs to learn in order to be more effective in their work and provide greater contribution. Below are some of those skills:

1. A technical writer needs to understand the technical aspects of the subject that they are writing on. For example if a technical writer is writing on the cell phones, their descriptions or reviews, they need to understand the cell phone technology really well only then they will be able to provide the nice information and otherwise not. Therefore they need to educate themselves really well about the core subject and keep learning new things every day.

2. Technical writers need to work on their communication skills really well. Not only the writing part but also otherwise the way you communicate with others. The communication skills tell the ability of an individual to communicate their thoughts and ideas in the most simplified forms. That is essentially the same thing what technical writers do. Therefore make the communication skills not only a part of your writing but make it a habit too.

3. As a technical writer you need to grow your network well so that you can effectively reach your clients. Being good at your communication skills, you will be in a much better position to do that and make your network grow which will be an important exercise in your work. Therefore working on communication skills is must.

4. Every now and then you will have to meet your clients and ensure that you get the requirements really well and provide the solution to them. In such meetings it is important to mark your impression well so that you fit right in the eyes of the clients. And it's not only about clients. You will also be required to work along with your team mates and there also you need to plan and discuss things together. In such settings again, your communication skills will be very handy throughout your work.
