You need to learn following things if you want to succeed as a writer:

1. Spend a lot of time in learning the language and the literature. It doesn't matter whether you come from literature background or not all that matters is that you well you learn and understand the literature. Work a lot on building your language skills. What all literary devices you can use, what are the various experiments you can do in your writings - work on all these things.

2. Read other people's work. This is a good habit and the writers should read what other writers have been writing. What all things and ideas they talk about and what kind of writings have been done so far. That will also give you the idea of scope of your writings.

3. Keep writing. Do not stop writing. Doesn't matter how much you have written. If you want to grow further, you just need to keep writing. That is the only way to get the success as a writer.

4. Wherever you go, learn the habit of keeping a notebook or a digital device on which you can write. It adds a lot of value to your writings. The small things that you notice, little things that someone says and you forget later, doing interviews or research, in all these cases it makes a lot of sense to carry your notebook and note everything down in order to get your facts and information.

5. Do not restrict yourself to your desk. Go out and meet the people from different walks of life. It is extremely important to grow your professional network and get in touch with the other writers so that later you can get benefited through their connections. This is extremely important for fresher writers who have not got enough experience in this industry.

If you focus on all these skills and work on them every day, you will learn great things and will be able to get the success.
