Journalism or reporting is an academic study concerned with the collection and editing of news or the management of a news medium. The career life of a journalist or a reporter is very exciting. A reporter is a person who collects the information regarding the happening of certain events and reports it to the public. He/ she have the responsibility to deliver correct and timely news to the public.

The news should be free from any bias and should not hinder the personal interests of a community or individual in any way. Journalism, being one of the prime career choices among students entrusts lot many opportunity doors to be opened if studied from this city’s top institutions. It is a tool that narrows the gap between what is happening around the world and the people who want to know about it. Incorrect or incomplete information can be a cause of unrest in the society. Gil Thelen, thus, calls a Journalist as ‘A Committed Observer’. He says that the journalist needs to see the world from a different perspective. He needs to know what is important and what is not and report accordingly. He should be vigilant enough to observe things which are important and require attention.

Reporting is critical to the media industry and also to a high functioning and aggressive democracy like India. A journalist needs to have many skills like reading and writing skills, listening and observing skills, etc. Some tips to become a successful reporter are as follows:

  • Be a keen reader. A journalist should enhance his/ her knowledge in any and every form possible. He should read about various subjects like business, economics, politics, cooking, etc. In the long run, he may specialise in any one field.
  • The communication skills of a journalist should be extremely good. He should be well versed in the language in which is reporting. If he is working for an English channel, then he should be very fluent in the language. If he working for a Hindi or any other regional language channel, then he should be good in that language. This is a very important aspect which a journalist has to consider.
  • A formal education is also very important. A good journalist should the degree from a reputed college so that his experience and practical knowledge is good. He should be able to work in difficult situations and terrains too. Therefore, a proper degree in Journalism and Mass Communication, a diploma or a certificate course in the same is a must.
  • Develop a good CV. Get internship during your period of study under two or three firms at least so that you know the aura of working in a professional news agency.

  • Choosing your niche as per your interest is also an important task to do. For example, if a person is interested in fashion designing, then he may not do reporting for the economic section of the paper. The kind of experience you gain in both the types is different, so you need to think about your interest in the beginning.
  • Do a lot of writing in your free time. Write about you think is interesting and get it evaluated. Build your vocabulary and get an edge over others. Stay up-to-date on all the current information. Read newspapers, magazines and journals and secure as much information as you can.
  • You can also get first-hand experience if your start your own local newspaper or magazine. Start small but dream big. Try and make contacts with people and write and publish things which you find are interesting enough for you and which may attract public attention. Also, send your articles to newspapers and magazines and try to open all the gates that you can in order to gain experience in the field.
  • Internet has made our life so connected. We can share our work and opinions with our known ones easily through various social networking sites like Facebook, WhatsApp, etc. One can make his/ her own personal blog and share his work with everyone in a creative and innovative way. Join various clubs and associations and share your work with them. Make your blog popular by talking about it in front of people who may find it interesting. You may also earn a good amount of money from it.
  • Hone your technical skills. Know what you are good at such as HTML, CSS, etc and let your bosses know about it.
  • Make a lot of connections through internships and other activities and remember to stay in contact with the people who you think can turn out to be an asset in the future.
