To be a doctor is an astounding dream. Medical is considered as one of the most reputed and respectable professions. If a student is opting for medical as career option, he obviously has to work hard and he must have the capability to grasp more. The candidate must have much of forbearance, as it takes a lot of years to be a doctor. Also, the student should have a keen interest in biology, a medical is all about biology which itself involves the study of life and living organism including their physical and chemical structure, development and evolution.

Admission criterion:

Aspirants with biology subject in 11th and 12th standard i.e. medical stream in senior secondary level needs a minimum of 60% of marks in 12th grade having physics, chemistry, and biology as mandatory subjects can appear for medical competitive exams conducted on national as well as state level. There are ample of tests which are organized all over India, for instance, AIPMT, AIIMS, MBBS, BDS, BAMS etcetera. Every entrance exam has its own set of rules for the ranking process and these have a different pattern. These are usually conducted in the month of May and June i.e. after students get the result of boards. Generally, students get admissions in the medical colleges on the basis of their ranks in different entrance exams.

List of medical colleges in India:


There are numerous medical colleges in India which are ranked as best colleges by NAAC and recognized by MIC (Medical Council of India). At present, there are 273 colleges in India which are providing various undergraduate as well as postgraduate courses of medical in their campus. These include government as well as private colleges. Following are the name of some medical colleges:

  • All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi: AIIMS is a group of public medical colleges of higher education and ranked as the top most medical college of the country. It was founded in 1956. It is well known for its excellence in all fields of medical sciences and health care.
  • Christian medical college, Vellore: CMC, it is also one of the top medical colleges in India and it was founded in 1900 by an American missionary and is a private, minority-run educational and research institute.
  • Armed Forces Medical College, Pune: It is affiliated with Maharashtra University of health Science and is one of the recognized colleges by medical council of India. It is known for its excellence in education and research.
  • Kasturba Medical College, Manipal: It is the top medical college among south zone. This college was the very first private college in India.
  • Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi: it was founded in 1916 and is one of the most prestigious medical colleges in Asia. It is affiliated with the University of Delhi.
  • Sri Ramachandra medical college and research institute, Chennai: it was accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ grade. This institute grew status of a ‘deemed university’ in 1994. It has all the tertiary care facility that provides the trainee with the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills from the finest doctors of the country.
  • King George’s Medical University, Lucknow: it was founded in 1911. University has a capacity for 1250 undergraduates and 450 postgraduates and for MBBS aspirants it has an intake of 250 students each year.
  • Bangalore medical college and research institute, Bangalore: it is the only medical college in Bangalore and it is the best college in Karnataka. The facilities available in this college are The facilities available includes departments of Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radiology and Radiotherapy, physiotherapy, Forensic Medicine super specialties include Plastic Surgery.
  • Calicut medical college, Calicut: it is one of the premium medical colleges which is affiliated to University of Calicut and Kerala health science.
