dear   chhavi,

An astronomer is a scientist who studies celestial bodies such as black holes, moons, planets, stars, nebulae, microwave background radiation. He researches the world beyond earth. These are scientists who study the universe and the objects within it. They are specialists who focus on galaxies, stars, planets, star-forming regions and the sun, the search for life, the origin and the evolution of universe as a whole. An astronomer can either be observational or theoretical astronomer. The former focus on direct study of stars, planets, galaxies and sophisticated instruments attached to modern telescopes. The latter analyses how these systems may have formed and evolved.

For becoming an astronomer one should take physics, chemistry and maths as main subjects in class 11th and 12th. For becoming an observational astronomer one should do graduation and do post graduation course in physics, astronomy or astrophysics. After this do Ph.D. in your subject of post graduation. After that fill up for the vacancies in various institutes. Those who are interested in theoretical astronomy need to pursue a career in science stream after class 12th. One can go for physics honours with mathematics as subsidiary subject. Thereafter one can get a postgraduate degree in physics or astronomy followed by specialization in astronomy. After that one can do Ph.D. and prepare for CSIR-Net. After that one can go in theoretical astronomy. Regarding career after gaining a higher qualification you can become astrophysicist or scientists in research and development establishments like ISRO and IIAP. Those who clear the CSIR- UGC and have a Ph.D. can opt for teaching.
