From your querry its clear that you are aware of the course and probably planning to pursue or pursuing the course.

As a Fashion designer, merely having an eye for details or colours or materials will not be enough, you need to be unique, out of the box thinker and must be able to market yourself.

As such no formal training is required to be a fashion designer, you can just have basic knowledge and begin your own boutique. But an additional knowledge through the mouth of experts will only enhance your expertise. So its good if you have a certificate to sustain you in the market.
Your next step would be to see where exactly your interests lies, I mean the market you wish to target, i.e are you interested in haute couture, ready to wear, fitness, the mass market or niches such as eco market.
Within this major field also you would have to decide on areas you would like to excel like womens ethnic wear or womens evening gown and so on.
As a Fashion designer, there is no fixed time of working. For you to make a name in the market, you would have to be on toes 24/7 and mainly develop a lot of contacts which will help you sustain in the market.
If you have your own boutique, you are the king, you can fix your timing and work accordingly, but if you are associated with the fashion world, be sure of no fixed time and also a rework every now and then.
Wish you all the very best
