The working hours of an editor are usually dictated by a number of factors which are mentioned as below:

1. If you are independently working as an editor for various books or magazines you will not be facing sharp deadlines. You will be bale to manage the work as per your convenience and therefore can enjoy flexible working hours. But this is usually the case once you have got experience and prominent name in the publishing industry. As a fresher it's often tough to work as a free lance editor.

2. If you are working in a newspaper then you will have to follow strict deadlines and therefore the timings will be rigid. You may not be able to take many breaks as the schedule will be quite hectic. The vacations are also tough to get in such cases. You have to work as team and therefore you cannot be sure about the timings that you may have to work for.

3. In certain cases you will be required to work in the nights also. This is important specially in the case of newspapers which get published usually around midnight. Therefore you may have to work till late night and ensure that every story that you have worked on is right and there is not a single problem in that. Remember that the work will be read by huge number of people and you cannot afford to make mistakes as an editor. Women however get flexibility as they are often reluctant to work in the night shifts and the management considers that too.

4. The editors are also supposed to meet the sharp deadlines and therefore need to keep a tab on the time all day long throughout their work. The editors should know the value of time and therefore need to extend their hours or work very hard to improve the efficiency or productivity of the publishing.

5. It varies from company to company but in most cases the editors do not work for more than 9 hours a day. But during that time they are usually packed with a lot of work and the schedule is often hectic. They have to work for five days a week normally, and which five days that depends on the project they work on.
