Almost all process and manufacturing industry such as steel, oil , petrochemical , power and defense production will have a separate instrumentation department which is manned and managed by instrumentation engineers. Instrumentation engineer can take up a job as process engineer in heavy industries such as thermal power stations, steel plants, refineries, cement and fertilizer plants etc
. They can work as design and product development engineer in compasses that manufactures specialized instruments such as actuators, measuring gauges etc ( Electronics Design & Manufacturing). They can get associated with manufacturing or food processing industry which run in an automated set up as industrial automation or robotics engineer. They can work with bio medical instruments manufacturing units as maintenance and repair engineer. One may also choose to move sideways into other career areas either within or outside their industry. This might include roles in purchase, sales, marketing, finance, IT or general management. These engineers can puruse consultancy-based work as well after gaining certain years of experience in particular industry. They can also get involved in academic research or may take up a job as lecturer in engineering colleges.To attain senior level position which may include planning and managing tasks as well as leading new development , one needs to have master's degree.
