Hi,

For getting a decent job as a fishery scientist apart from the excellence in theory you need to be good in interpersonal skills like good communication, learning strategies, time management, problem solving expertise, empathy, complex problem solving etc.

A fresher in any field doesn't know much about the job in any field , so how is it possible for you to understand that. Here you will have to under go a training program for that where they will train you according to the job requirement. Initially you will have to learn the traits of the job and slowly become an expert of the subject. Theory and practical are two different things.

A fishery scientist is mainly connected with research work , which includes mainly improvement in fishing methods and the production processes. there are so many other areas where their expertise is required.

This the subject which most of the students prefer now a days and are choosing it as their career. As the scope is growing in India and abroad. Fishes are the dominating class in fresh water as well as in the sea , so their safety is looked upon as the most important issue in the current scenario.

Hello friend,

The fishery scientist is a person who studies about fishes, their distribution, classification their breeding, pathology, nutrition, genetics, immunology, cultivation, harvesting, post cultivation storage. Technically speaking a person holding a post graduate degree of Fishery Science is known as Fish Scientist. But practically some one holding a doctoral degree in Fish science is more suitable for making an entry as Fishery Scientist.

The job of a fishery scientist is versatile. You have to interact with students, colleagues, seniors, clients and customers. Therefore a strong subject knowledge will be an asset for you.

You have to be in touch with your subjects starting from graduation to doctoral degree program. The clear understanding of practical courses and instruments you handled will definitely help to grow in career. The fishery science is a technical profession, it includes many disciplines, therefore, you should be aware of all the major disciplines of fishery science.

Fishery Scientist

During post graduation and doctoral degree programs, you have to study the specialized subject. Therefore a good command over your specialized subject is must. Another thing a post graduate and a doctoral degree student also conduct research as a part of degree program. A deep understanding of research work done is very important. I have seen many candidates in interview, who could not explain in detail and nicely what and how they have done in their research work. It clearly shows that students has not done his or her research work seriously.

The decent job for a fishery scientist will be in college, university, research institutions, governmental laboratories, non governmental organizations, zoos. In government sector, the fresher should have good academic record. A couple of published research papers and review article will definitely help the person to get a decent job. In private sector, your interpersonal skills will matter a lot.

The field of fishery science is an ever growing field. There are new scientific developments which you have know. You should also have in your mind, what you wish to purse in your future. As a fishery scientist, it will be expected from you, what you want to do as researcher in your field. The regular touch of subject and research or your field will make you comfortable to answer this.

My finals words for you are, be i touch with your subject (basic knowledge of fish classification, types, distribution etc), know your instruments and techniques and develop strong interpersonal skills,

With all my best wishes,

Good Luck...
