Hello My Dear Civil Engineer,

What a day it is? I was just talking to a civil engineer graduate as part of my career counselling session at my place. She was confused and was thinking that she made a mistake by taking Civil stream in the engineering. In my more than seven years of career counselling and some years into teaching, I have come across civil engineers who feel that civil engineering is a curse and the jobs available are only of execution and of standing under the sun in cement and water for years together.

I came across your query and felt very excited since I would like to see a civil engineer like you to contribute to the nation directly. Let me tell you that there are only three types of people who contribute to the nation directly every day - Engineer, Doctor and Soldier.

I think you should be proud of being an engineer and that too a civil engineer.

I am thank ful and glad that you approached CareerGuide.com for seeking guidance to your career concern. I am sure that we experts can help you find your career path way.

Civil Engineering:

After being a Civil Engineer, you do not always have jobs of execution or surveying or liasoning only. There are ample of other things which happen at the back end of any construction project. Construction industry is the second largest employer after agriculture and there fore it has tremendous scope for growth and job opportunities.

You have scored 87% in engineering , which is a fantastic and proud thing. I congratualte you for this.

Construction Project Management:

Gone are the days when Civil Engineers used to do MTech or ME in Civil Engineering, since candidates doing ME or MTech after Civil are doing the same level of jobs in the industry and no difference in the salary package offered to just BE Civil candadate.

The excellent area where a Civil engineer can contribute and grow like anything is the Construction Project Management area.

10 lakh Construction Project Management professionals are required annually for the construction industry, HOWEVER it does not get them.

I would strongly like you to consider a PGD in Infrastructure Business focused on Construction and Project Management. BE Civil + PGD in Construction Management can give you a starting salary package of Rs. 4 lakhs and placements in top infra and construction companies.

You can consider Samvit School of Infrastructure Business, located at Pune. Samvit is India's Only Dedicated Construction BSchool.

You can contact me on [email protected] for more clarifications and questions about samvit and PGDIB course.

Best Luck

Dear Aspirant
Thank you very much for contacting CareerGuide.com as you have shown your concern in little confusion what shall I do ????? Confusion is the symptomatic of various problems which can deviate you easily, avoid this tendency and join the elite club of academics for the self motivation. You will not raise such question as you will have the answers of each and every questions related to the career in civil engineering.

My dear friend why you are underestimating your academic potential as you are a great asset of nation and society has huge respect for you because you are an Engineer and ready to join the regime of civil engineers, isn't ? If not so then ask yourself with honesty you will get answer that you have done it by default or under pressure of social references where you parents dragged you into this misfit, again it is so then give a serious thought to it otherwise you will be setting very bad example for other aspirants those are trying to opt precious career in civil engineering.

Engineering has no place of confusion and half-hearted approach. Let me diagnose your problem by two means negative factor is that you had different interest which you could not pursue? The positive factor still you have not explored the civil which has a broad spectrum which could be explored with your immediate action and then join either industry work force and rejuvenate your interest or join higher study at MTECH level and make your specialization with your full commitment that is the way to come out from this boredom.

As you are a good student reflecting in your result card which is not sufficient without self motivation and interest make use of your current report and acquire the spark in life, i have doubt that yo are planing to switch over the stream??

By the way if you are not convinced then you can give a second thought to the different career option like civil-architecture, for that you have to clear NAT at B.Arch or you can make a lateral entry --enquire about it through the proper channel. Now a days money oriented people joing management also and giving new dimension in career.

Good luck
