HI There,

Generally after few years of experience, one should opt for working as a freelancer or start on his own.

But prior to that, the major criteria is that, you need to be well compassed with all spectrum wherever a dietitian can work.
Right from toddlers to teenagers to middle aged to old age people. Also people with medical and non medical issues, people with fitness issues, post operative care, sports etc.

Best would be to gain few years of experience and then decide to begin on your own. At the same time I would advise, you to be associated with a hospital or a fitness group as a consultant, at the same time you work as a freelance consultant. Being a consultant, will help you being in touch with the current happenings.

Hope this helps.
Wish you good luck...

Dear Aspirant,

Career Expert Meghna has provided very good suggestion. Let me summarize for you:

I have explained the process of setting up own practice. Before you do, you may work under dietitian or in some hospital. Your work experience will help you get feel of the field, build networking with other professionals and hospitals. Work experience will also help you specialize in some aspect of dietics for example specialized to deal with weight problem or life style management or geriatric problems. Average two years of work experience would be sufficient to start your own practice.

While setting up own practice, continue work as consulting dietician with hospitals, teaching institutes/colleges and with organizations working in the same field.

Hope your query is answered.

Best Wishes for your bright career,
