If a technical writer wants to work as a free lancer there are plenty of opportunities for them to do that. However there are quite a few things that they may have to keep in mind before they start working as a free lancer:

1. Working as a free lancer is often fun but it also brings in a lot of responsibilities. You need to be disciplined and responsible enough to manage your work. All the tasks need to be planned and scheduled by yourself. Therefore one has to be careful about that.

2. If you are working as a free lancer, you need to find your clients by yourself. Which means you will have to grow your network, figure out a way to reach your clients and try to convince them about your services. This is often a tedious job and involves a lot of struggle and hard work specially at the initial stages when you are not an established writer and have just entered the industry.

3. Free lancer work is usually fun as they get to work as per their own schedule and do not have any external pressure except for the clients deadlines and therefore the job satisfaction is usually very high in this case. They can plan their vacations really well by themselves and set the schedule as per their choice which often is a joyful thing for many professionals.

4. You need to build the technical expertise really well on the subject that you are writing for. Since as a free lancer you won't have the support of other staff members and co workers who would be able to explain the things to you. Therefore the learning part becomes an important challenge for free lance writers as they have to learn and grasp the thorough knowledge of the subject that they are writing for. They need to have foolproof understanding of the subject so that they can mark their impression through clear communication in their writings in a simplest way possible.
