As fancy the name sounds, the course and career is equally complicated too. Aeronautical and aerospace is an ambitious career path yet a field less traveled. People who make the cut are the ones who truly love the whole concept of aviation and its constituents. Though both aeronautical and aerospace are different, they are similar as they totally rely on the concepts of physics applied to both. They are different branches of the same tree. The difference lies in the type of aircraft they will be dealing in, yet it is an important and stark difference to look out for. An aeronautical engineer deals with aircraft that are designed for earth’s atmosphere, while an astronautical engineer deals with aircraft meant to travel beyond earth’s atmosphere, like rockets and satellites.

Now the question comes, how does one move towards such a difficult course of a career. As the difficulty level of the subject is higher, the number of colleges, good colleges, becomes lower and the factors to look out for the increase. Especially in India, given the fact that infrastructure is a great issue and this course has equally high infrastructure requirements, the struggles gets real. Thus, following are the colleges offering the courses in aeronautical and aerospace:

  1. Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore
  2. Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT), Mumbai
  3. Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT), Kanpur
  4. Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT), Chennai
  5. Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram
  6. Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT), Kharagpur
  7. Feroze Gandhi Institute of Engineering and Technology (FGIET), Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh
  8. Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (IIEST-S), Howrah
  9. PEC University of Technology (formerly Punjab Engineering College-PEC), Chandigarh
  10. Madras Institute of Technology, Anna University, Chennai

Being the best in the country, these colleges claim to offer the best of infrastructure to the students. They are well equipped with the models and tools for the practical understanding of this branch of science. Students can actually work on the different parts and machines involved in making or an aircraft. The colleges take them to various field and site visits to give them a better and deeper understanding of the logistics. Group discussions and guest lectures further add to enhance the knowledge of students in the space and field.

As all these factors play a major role while choosing a college for aerospace courses, one should first check the ranking of colleges and also the experiences shared by alumni at various forums online. Many colleges also offer exchange programmes for students to getter a better perspective and experience a whole new idea into the engineering of aircraft.

However, more important than this, are two other factors: courses and eligibility. One should know the right course to choose in this zone of engineering and check their eligibility for the same. Following are few of the most opted for courses:

  • Bachelor of Technology
  • Master of Aerospace Engineering (MAE)
  • Master of Science in Aeronautics & Astronautics
  • Sc. Aerospace Engineering
  • Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering

If you are applying for a bachelor courses, a candidate must have cleared 12th with PCM as their subjects. For post graduation courses, the candidate must hold a bachelor degree in the related field.

Career Prospects:

An aeronautical engineer is employed with industries that design or build aircraft, missiles, or spacecraft. They engage in the process of manufacturing, analyzing, research & development, and design. Now that the technology has totally altered the process, most of the work is done digitally, aeronautical or aerospace engineers too spend most of their time in designing or researching for the machines via computer applications and equipment. They also develop new technologies that can help enhance and boost the power and efficiency of the aircraft. However, their major focus is always to keep a check on the fact that the standards are met at each stage involved in the making of the machine. From quality checks to damage control, an engineer should have a tab of all.

Concluding the importance, one should always aim for the course they wish to pursue as the colleges in India are full of opportunities and each new day brings new hopes.
