Mechatronics is a newly developing branch of engineering in which multiple branches of engineering are embedded. Basically, it consists of a combination of electronics engineering and mechanical engineering. Some modern mechatronics courses also involve the computer engineering, control system engineering. The need to introduce mechatronics as a separate field came from the industry need of a multidisciplinary approach to complex engineering problems which required the knowledge of various subjects.

A simple example of it could be developing a robotic machine which is capable of doing some mechanical activity. Thus, for running its mechanical parts we will require knowledge of servo motor which can be covered in mechanical engineering.  And for sending the instruction to run this motor through a microcontroller, we will require knowledge of electronics engineering and its application. The electronics engineering and mechanical engineering are two separate fields but mechatronics combines them to solve the problems which require the application of both.

Mechatronics engineering is a four-year undergraduate program in most of the colleges. The core mechatronics subject comes into the picture in the second year of engineering. The prominent subject which a student needs to study are engineering thermodynamics and heat transfer, strength of material, digital integrated circuits, theory of machines, CAD, robotics system, digital signal processing, hydraulic and pneumatic system etc. As mentioned earlier, these subjects are synergetic combination of computer engineering, electronics engineering, mechanical engineering, and control system. Thus mechatronics engineering provides an opportunity to become more competent and knowledgeable in the field of engineering.

Who can study mechatronics?

All the students who have completed 10+2 of their education with physics, chemistry, and mathematics can opt for mechatronics.  Students who want to do mechatronics engineering from the national institute of technology will have to appear and qualify in JEE main exams. And those who want to opt for IITs will have to appear and qualify JEE advance. For all other colleges, students will have to appear and qualify in the respective state’s common entrance exam. Some premier institutes, such as VIT (Vellore institute of technology} conducts their own examination for admission into engineering courses.

As the study of mechatronics involves the knowledge of core subjects of mechanical and electronics, it becomes challenging and demanding. Each subject will be new and the student will have to adapt to each of these subjects in very less time. Studying the subjects of mechatronics will require great energy level, a strong foundation of mathematics mainly derivatives- integrals and ability to delve into the subject for long hours. But the important thing to note is that study will not be monotonous rather it will be interesting as new things will come into play.

Most of the colleges will have automation and CIM laboratories, advanced machine testing facilities, PLC SCADA laboratories, microcontroller labs and robotic labs. So students will get ample time to go through practical knowledge of the subject which in turns becomes very useful to complement theoretical knowledge. Students will be able to accomplish final year project and industry visits in a seamless manner so as to be ready for industry.

Career options for mechatronics engineer

As mechatronics engineer is a person having knowledge of multidisciplinary fields he will get the widest range of career opportunity. He can get hired in the automation industry, robotics industry, automobile industry, aerospace industry, mining-oil exploration, computer-aided designs, safety and quality management, embedded electronics design industry etc.

Companies which are opting in core fields, mainly automobile and automation, hire mechatronics engineers.  Prominent names in this field are Mahindra and Mahindra, Honda two wheelers, MU sigma, Tata motors, Robert Bosch engineering and Business solutions, Point technologies, Edward hall etc. Software companies which have a presence in a mechanical application also hire mechatronics students.

Top colleges in India for mechatronics engineering

  • Vellore institute of technology : This is one of the oldest and reputed institutions in South India. According to NIRF ranking, the institute stands at no. 1 in private engineering colleges of India. It is an autonomous institution and conducts its own examination for entry into engineering courses. The institute provides post graduation in mechatronics. Though it does not offer undergraduate B-tech in mechatronics but its mechanical engineering under graduation course is one of the most sought after engineering courses.

  • Manipal institute of technology: This institute is one of the most premier institutes situated in Udupi district of Karnataka. It is a multinational institute having branches in Dubai and Malaysia. The institute is well established and possesses state of art laboratories for practical application in undergraduate mechatronics engineering.

  • Indian Institute of technology Patna: IITs are one of the top institutes in India. IIT Patna is one of the institutions which offer an undergraduate course in mechatronics. For admission into the institution, a student will have to appear and qualify for JEE mains and JEE advanced

  • SRM University Kanchipuram Tamilnadu: The university offers under graduation course in mechatronics. In 2005, the university included mechatronics in its syllabus. The university offers best faculty and state of art infrastructure and laboratory.
