Good question but really difficult to answer.

Since success parameters are different for different people.
For some reaching a manager level is success, and for some being at the chief level is success.

So the value for a job would depend on your perception of success which you have created for you yourself.

As far as the general industry structure goes.
Anyone in the Marketing department, moves up the ladder quickly. Since he is into getting business for the organization, so he is the most valued person in the organization.

Followed by the Finance department. Since they are also revenue generators and investments are majorly their forte.
Last is the HR, though they are the man force behind every organization and giving targets and maintaining employee decor, still they move up the ladder a little bit slower.
Now it would completely depend on how you view each role.
Just by choosing a role based on the above description will never lead you anywhere. Since these roles require skills which you must possess to help you reach the top.

As far as Events Management is concerned, though one does not require majorly any qualifications, since it is the creative minds job. But these days since it is very much in demand, public stresses on the qualification.
There are degree as well as certificate courses available for the same.
Since this is more a creativity job, you need to be completely different and innovative as well as fitting into the budget or rather be economical and less priced than your competitor.

Apart from this the major quality required to be successful in this job is Word of mouth. The more friendly you are with people the more they help you get business. As well as you must have contacts with Mandap decorators, Flowers or boutique, caterers and musicians. and other decors.
