The stream that you chose does not matter as much as your passion

The world is getting larger and smaller at the same time. With the content and knowledge being ever increasing, the world is getting larger. At the same time, with the integration of computing and Smartphone technology, it is getting smaller. One might consider the amount of job availability in India reducing, given its overpopulated status and the over-competitive nature of corporate domains. However, while there is a lack of jobs in the mainstream fields such as engineering and medicine, new undiscovered fields of work are sprouting up from every corner of the world.

Creativity and innovation are the two most valuable aspects of one’s nature that are valued. Of course, they come after the passion for the job that you want to do.

So if you wish to pursue a career in the field of Information Security it is totally possible, given that you are excited and passionate enough for the job. If you are sure that you will be happier in working in the Information Security field that is what you should do regardless of the degree that you possess. There is a good chance that you might succeed in the field of Information Security based on your passion compared to a person who has the formal education in the field but has no interest in the corporate job whatsoever.

The competition that you will face in the field of Information Security

So now that you know that you can succeed in the field of your passion, the next thing that comes into play is the knowledge that you need for succeeding in the field of something that you are not prepared/educated for. Luckily, in India, most of the engineering colleges do not employ a method of imparting practical knowledge to the students. Instead, the colleges are set to function on teaching an outdated syllabus that has little or no practical relevance to the current trends around the world. This goes true for almost all the different branches. So, it is highly likely that the newbie that is educated in the field of Information Security has almost the same knowledge that you have in terms of practical exposure. Also, it is important to note that the practical exposure in the field is what counts in the corporate world and nothing else.

The steps that you need to take to ensure success

According to primitive knowledge, it is said that ‘You need 10,000 hours to learn a new thing.’ In your case, you might need to learn a new programming language. However, recent studies by Josh Kaufman, who proved his theory at TEDxCSU, show that this is false. All you need to do to learn something at a ‘good enough’ level is invest 20 hours or dedicated learning time for practice. So, the step one is putting in 20 hours in the practice of learning about the practical knowledge in the field of Information Technology will give you all that you need to succeed in the field.

The step two is to ensure that all the time that you put into learning is done with sheer dedication. In your case, you wish to pursue a career out of the field of your study, so it is safe to assume that you are pretty passionate about it.

If you are able to follow these two steps, you will be able to achieve great heights in the field of Information Security.
