Admission to the dentistry course i.e Bachelor of Dental Surgery -BDS) is through an entrance test ( NEET or other admission test) conducted by the concerned medical or dental college. The BDS course is of four years duration and is open to students who havecompleted class 12 with the subjects physics, chemistry and biology. The four years course is followed by one year of compulsory internship. The admission test assess the candidate knowledge of physics, chemistry and biology till class 12. The dental colleges are there in every state. Admission to these colleges is governed by domicile status of student in particular state. Dental colleges must be recognized by the dental council of India. The syllabus of the BDS course covers anatomy, physiology, uses of dental material, design and fitting of dental appliances, other clinical studies such as dental surgery, anesthesia, orthodontics. After completion of BDs one can either pursue MDS or post graduate diploma courses. Specialization in dentistry include :-

Orthodontics focuses on preventing and treating mouth, teeth and jaw problems and straightening a person's teeth and correcting the way the jaws line up.
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons operate on the jaws and mouth.
Periodontics is the specialization for treating the gums and the bone supporting the teeth.
Prosthodontics deals with the making of artificial dentures.oral pathology is thye study of the diseases of the mouth.
Endodontics deals with root canal therapy.

Admission to MDS course is usually through a competitive entrance test.
