Professional training along with right aptitude , interest and personality attributes such as feeling for words and the ability to express themselves lucidly and concisely, curiosity , resourcefulness , an unbiased approach , wide ranging interests, inarticulate people to talk easily , power of observation, tenacity to get to the bottom of things, an inquiring mind , punctuality , willingness to work extremely hard, ability to sift the relevant from the irrelevant , ability to absorb atmosphere and sum up people and situations quickly and an intuition to perceive what is not directly revealed.





Professional courses and training in journalism is available at many universities in the country and also at many autonomous institutes specializing in media studies. Some of the media houses have set up their own schools of journalism.Most of the courses in journalism are post graduate diploma or degree courses of one to two years duration, for which graduates are eligible.




Admission is usually on basis of an entrance test which evaluates power of observation, proficiency in language , general awareness , analytic; and verbal reasoning skills and overall communication skills.



Universities like the university of Delhi, university of Mumbai, symbiosis international university etc are among those who are offering undergraduate degree course devoted to mass media or journalism and mass communication which focus on journalism. Some of the other prominent institutes offering post graduate courses in mass communication are mudra institute of communication, Ahmadabad, Indian institute of mass communication , new Delhi, symbiosis institute of mass communication , pune, AJK mass communication research center, jamia millia islamia , new Delhi, university of pune, times center for media studies, new Delhi, the manorma school of communication, kottayam, Asian school of journalism , Chennai , Xavier institute of communication, Bhartiya vidya bhawan, PDN college of communication and management , Mumbai, Bharttiya vidya bhawan, new Delhi, SNDT women's university Mumbai.
