Meteorology is the science of the atmosphere. Meteorologists work in weather forecasting, atmospheric research, teaching and other kinds of applied meteorology such as air pollution control. As a meteorologist one needs to have good understanding of maths and physics as well as meteorology. S/he needs to precise and methodical when recording and analyzing data. S/he must be able to present findings and predictions clearly both verbally and in writing. S/he needs to have an enquiring mind, good analytic skills, the ability to deal with large amount of information, a logical approach to problem solving and good observation.Computer and technical skills are also needed i this career.An aspirant keen of making a career in meteorology may opt for an undergraduate course i.e. BSc or B Tech soon after completion of his class 12 with physics and chemistry mainly. A number of universities including IITs offers undergraduate and post graduate programme in meteorology/ atmospheric science. A master's programme i.e. MSc or MTech can usually be completed in two years after the bachelor's degree. The requirement for admission to this programme is usually an undergraduate degree in meteorology , physics, engineering or related discipline. Students who are keen to carry out research work can go for PhD.
