Hello

Thank you for choosing Mera career guide and writing to us.

I can list down the eligibility criteria for being a psychiatrist in India but before that I would like to advice you about the types of courses a Psychiatric study involves. They are Clinical Psychology, Psychiatry physician, Psychiatric nursing, Psychiatric Social work, Psychological medicine and Psychiatric medical and social psychology.

The eligibility req are as follows.

1. MPhil Clinical Psychology:

Requires a bachelors in Psychology degree or associated psychology degree with Psychology element in it. The duration to complete the MPhil degree is two years.

2. PhD Clinical Psychology:

It requires a +10+2+3+2 pattern to be followed. That is, a tenth standard with minimum first class pass, a twelfth standard with a minimum first class pass, a three year Bachelor degree in Psychology with min first class, a two year Masters degree in Clinical Psychology with a minimum first class. Apart from this, you are required to posit UGC-NET scores and UGC-JRF scores if you are willing to seek monthly stipend throu out your PhD duration. And the duration to complete this PhD degree is three years.

3. MPhil In Psychiatric Social work:

It requires you to have followed the +10+2+3 pattern to be eligible to apply for an MPhil in Psychiatric social work program. To be qualified, you require a 10th class pass with min first class, 12th class pass with min first class and a three year bachelor degree with min first class. If you are from reserved category, it can be allowed to have a min 55% and for students out of reservation category it requires a mandatory first class degree. And for this particular MPhil, it is mandatory to have studied only MA sociology or Master in Social work. The duration to complete this MPhil degree is two years.

4. Diploma in Psychiatric nursing:

This requires you to have followed +10+2+1 pattern. As usual it is mandatory to have completed a tenth standard, twelfth standard and a one year Diploma in Midwifery and general nursing with a minimum A or B grade. It is also recommended to have had two year work experience as nurse in Indian hospitals before you apply to this program. The duration to complete this diploma is one year.

Most of these courses are offered by Central institute of psychiatry in Ranchi, India and you could follow up on their details for further info. Hope this helps.
