Oceanography is the study of seas, its coastline, shelves and the ocean bed. It is an interdisciplinary science which is broadly divided into physical oceanography, chemical oceanography, geological oceanogrpahy and marine biology. Increased awareness regarding marine resources and their potential has created ademand for ocean specialist. A wide range of environmental services are required in India to support increasing marine activities including weather forecasting, the survey charting of coastal waters and continental shevles, maintaining archives on marine data, geophysical investigations and so on.



To pursue a career in oceanography astudent has to complete 12th with physics, chemistry and biology or maths. Thereafter an aspirant can seek admission in B.Sc Marine Sciences/ Geology/ Botany/ Microbiology or Biochemistry. The specialization in oceanography is offered at post graduate level. after completion of bachelor of science , a student has an option to do M.Sc Marine Sciences/ Physical oceanogrpahy/ Chemical oceanography/ Marine Biology / Marine Geology/ Ocean Life Sciences etc. The institutes which are offering courses in oceanography include Goa university, cochin university of science and technology , Andhra pradesh university, vishakhap[atnam, berhampur university,orissa, mangalore university and university of chennai
