Dear Student,

Through the civil services examination, the UPSC recruits personnel to services such as the Indian Administrative Services ( IAS) . The civil services are among India's largest employers. The type of work carried out by IAS officer is immensely varied. In the home office , for example , civil servants are mainly responsible for taking care of law and order. In the department of industry , they are responsible for organizing the industrial structure and application of science and technology to industry etc. The department of human resource development deals with the policies on education , sports , research facilities and various related issues. Other ministries deal with transport , tourism, information, agriculture etc. The IAS officers usually keep on switching from one department to another during the career span.

To sum up ,IAS officers are mainly responsible for handling government affairs. Their main responsibility at center level involve formulating and implementing policies pertaining to particular area such as finance, HR, industry etc. At the state or district level , they are mainly responsible for managing the district operations and implementation of various developmental programmes.
