Architecture is one of the most exciting and challenging fields of study. The sole idea of building designing spaces is a thrill that only few can relate to. Building a house is not at all an easy job. From safety to functionality, a lot of factors are to be kept in mind. However, research in architecture is a totally different side of the same coin. Particularly, there are three stages of a research that undergoes in architecture, namely:

  • Architecture processes: It involves more of a theoretical angle, like the designs and construction techniques, giving a thematically approach to the whole concept of building a building.
  • Architecture products: This deals with research of the projected product or the aesthetics of the materials used.
  • Architecture performance: Once a building is complete, aspects like quality, environmental performance and more are researched upon.

There are also different divisions under architecture study. For example, Environmental architecture, interior design, real estate development, industrial design, urban development, digital architecture and project management.

Eligibility:

To apply for courses for research in architecture, one should possess at least a bachelor's degree (B. Arch) in architecture or a post graduation (M.Arch) in the same. Research in Architecture is more like an M.Phil. or Ph.D. taken up in order to understand the field with more precision and delve deep into the processes involved in it.

Colleges offering the courses in Architecture:

  • Sir JJ College of Architecture, Mumbai
  • Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi
  • Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi
  • Integral University, Lucknow
  • Apeejay School of Architecture and Planning
  • IIT Kharagpur, Kharagpur
  • NIT Trichy, Tiruchirappalli
  • IIT Roorkee, Roorkee
  • Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Howrah
  • Jadavpur University, Kolkata
  • Faculty of Architecture, Sarvajanik College of Engineering and Technology, Surat
  • Manipal University
  • CEPT University

The scope of work:

A research architect is typical involved in the theoretical and consultant work. They recommend solutions to the complex problems architectures faces in their processes. They work closely with the engineers and provide technical directions for various functions like development, testing, and design. They act more of a coach or mentor to the architecture team working on various projects in a firm. For various aspects like sustainability, wastage, productivity and functionality, they are consulted in order to keep the project in line with the need of the coming century.

Job Prospects:

For about 10 to 20 years back,  a research in architecture was not even thought of. The recent phenomenon in the world, from climate change to technology, all have led to the creation of this new found branch of architecture. Nowadays, one needs sustainability experts, material consultants, design specialist and what not in the making of a building or a design. The market is totally fresh and untouched for now. Hence, as the industry is a newbie, the jobs are also limited. Though larger firms have already released the need of research, others are yet to through their light on it.

As the scope of work is entirely different from the mainstream branch of architecture, the jobs in this field are fairly less in demand, specifically in India. Though more firms are realizing the importance of hiring a research architecture each day, the pace is slow and will take time till it reaches the peak. Research and development in architecture is more called for in countries like Australia, U.S., and the European market. However, this doesn't lessen the importance of the job in India. One can be sure of the fact that jobs are highly paid for. After completing the required courses in Architecture, one can attain job titles like an architectural manager, Scientific Research Assistant, Architecture Researcher, Research Associate, under the research team.
