Behavioral sciences are going to dominate the medical arena in the next few years. The sudden increase in life style diseases such as cardiac ailments, , hypertension, depression , anxiety etc among the young population, rising incidence of suicides and problems like absenteeism and alcoholism in the corporate sector are adding to the demand of well qualified and skilled psychiatrists. Psychiatrists are qualified doctors who diagnose and treat illness and problems related to the mind through medication and psychotherapies. A good psychiatrist must be emotionally stable and have the ability to listen. S/he should have empathy and excellent observation . S/he should have an interest to study and understand the various dynamics of human behavior, genuine concern and sympathy for patient coupled with an objective approach for understanding their problems is also crucial. S/he should have immense patience and perseverance
. To make a career in psychiatry , one needs to puruse a post graduate degree in psychiatry after completion of MBBS.
A psychiatrist can work with regular hospitals, polyclinics as well as mental hospitals. They can even set up their own private clinics or work as counsellors in big industries or drug de-addiction centers. Those interested in academic and research work can take to teaching or higher studies in medical colleges and psychiatric institutions.
