Psychiatrist deals with the mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. A psychiatrist can easily differentiate between a mentally healthy person and a mentally sick one. Usually mental and psychosomatic problems arise in patients because of various surgical , medical and gynecological procedures. To make a career in psychiatry one has to study psychiatry at post graduate level after completion of MBBS. There are two options. One can either seek admission in MD or Diploma in psychiatry. The MD course is of three years duration while the diploma course is of two years. One can also join the DNB course organized by the National Board of Examinations which is equivalent to MD. Psychiatry is a lucrative and promising career option. Psychiatrists can seek employment in regular hospitals, poly clinics or mental hospitals. They can also get associated with rehabilitation centers to rehabilitate drug addicts, alcoholics, dipsomaniacs, juvenile delinquents. They can also start their private clinics or work as counsellors in big industries and corporate. those interested in academics and research work can take up teaching or research work at medical colleges and psychiatric institutions.
To be a good psychiatrist one must be emotionally stable. S/he should have empathy and excellent listening skills. S/he should have genuine concern and sympathy for the patient, good communication skills, empathy and an objective approach to understand the various problems of patient.
