Ayurvedicmedicines encompasses a wide range of treatment and lifestyle measures includingdietary recommendations, massages, medicinal herbs and meditation and breathing techniques of yoga. Some practioners also recommend intestinal cleansing through the use of laxatives or enemas. Depending on the patient's specific ailments and condition, he could be prescribed any o all of these various modes of therapy. The system perceives health as a balance of elements of air, earth, fire and water. It explains illness as excess or deficiency of any particular element. Ayurvedatreats illness at its source, rather than at the level of symptoms and help an individualto take responsibility for his own health and well being.


To excel in this profession one must have good concentration, self confidence , responsibility,caring nature, good communication and counseling skills and the ability to make important decisions after weighing up relevant details that the patient offers. Personal care and service attitude are important too.

Practioners can find employment as medical officer/ doctor at government and private ayurvedic hospitals, charitable institutions, medical colleges and training institutes. Many take up private practice , open their own retail shop of ayurvedic medicines. They can also be employed as supervisors in panch karma health centers. Ayurvedic doctors can work in industries engaged in ayurvedic preparations. He can also work as professor in ayurvediccolleges or do research.

To become an ayurvedic physician it is mandatory to hold a relevant medical degree in ayurveda like the BAMS degree. It is mandatory to have studied Physics, Chemistry and Biology at 12th level and then to have passed the entrance exam conducted by either at national level like the AIIMS or by the individual college entrance test. With these results, students can apply for a BAMS degree and it takes 51/2 years to complete that alos includes a one year internship. With this BAMS degree any one can practice as an ayurvedic physician. There are other career routes one can follow with this degree.


  • General practitioner: With the BAMS degree you can practice as a general practitioner initially and if you are being trained by an expert physician then you can also handle ayurvedic surgeries for patients. If in India you can work at private ayurvedic hospitals or at your own clinics. If abroad, you can set up your own clinic but it depends on the country if they will permit you to have your own clinic.
  • Pharmacist:As a pharmacist you can work either at ayurvedic hospitals, dispensaries or even at pharmaceutical companies both in India and abroad. There are many companies manufacturing beauty products using ayurvedic materials and you can work at these companies anywhere around the world.
  • Consultant: You can also work as an ayurvedic consultant by attending to medical and non-medical needs of patients and prescribing them the current treatment to follow.
  • Beauty clinic: This is a contemporary fashion, where ayurvedic beauty clinics are very much in need. You can work at the clinics to exclusively deal only with skin and hair of the customers/ patients.
  • Ayurvedic spa: You can also seek job at ayurvedic spa either in India or abroad. These spa employs ayurvedic doctors to monitor the health, blood pressure and heart beat upon various treatments.

Ayurvedic Physician

  • Ayurvedic health centres: You can also get employed at private ayurvedic health centres, they are well known as vaidya salai and these centres specifically deal with diabetes, obesity, neuro problems, eye problems and many more. Patients are usually resident at these health centres for months and as a physician you will be responsible to treat them until they show improvement.
  • Research clinics: You can also set up your own research clinic to invent medicines to address certain ailments. Ayurvedic practitioners also tremendously set up research clinics to more often produce beauty products. You can set up such research clinics in India but it is not sure if you can set up one abroad as it depends on the country where you like to set up one.
  • Research at universities: You can also work at universities abroad to teach or conduct research if they have a course related to ayurveda. Very few universities abroad engage with this ancient medicinal practice research. You can conduct research at these universities and produce publications recommending medicines that you have found through your research.
