Well, Dear Friend,

Thanks For choosing us CareerGuide.com!!!

This is the problem which majority of students have at this juncture of - passing out of 10th and getting into 11th stream. As you are good in economics, It means you are having an interest and enjoy studying Economics. One should opt the stream after10th by keeping in view- his/her talent, interest and future scopes of not just a job but a career. Economics is a very good subject and having the excellent career opportunities. As you now, Economics drives the world. Since the time of Chanakya till today, economics has been a choice of top brains. In our country, weather it is our prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh or Nobel Laureate Dr. Amritya Sen or the great Chanakya, all are economists.

Therefore, As economics is the subject of your interest, it implies that you are also good at mathematics. Before clearing any other doubt,Firstly, you must be clear about your ultimate target- ie. what you really want to become. The small step like UG & PG education stream are also important but the more important is ultimate goal and once you have it planned, you will not have any difficulty to achieve the middle level goals.

So for you, the lover of economics, the ultimate goals can be

  • Indian Economics Service- IES (just like IAS)

  • To become an Economist (Professor of Economics)- Required to studyEconomicsat UG & PG level

  • To become a Mathematician/Scientist - required to study Maths at UG & PG Level

  • To become a CA/CS/ICWA and then CFA - the chartered financial professional

  • To become a Bank Officer- entry through Bank PO

  • To become a civil servant (IAS/IPS)

  • To become Engineering Economist- need to study Engineering Ecomonics at UG/PG level

  • To become an Actuary- Financial/Insurance Services.

  • Management Professional- MBA from IIMs/FMS/IITs/MDI and other top institutions.

These are some of the major career options with economics/maths. However if not in economics, you can also go for CDS (Defense services), SSC, Engineering and and other related options. So first of all decide what in life first and then accordingly "what now" should be decided.

My advice is that you should go for either Commerce or Arts Streams in your 11th & 12th studies. Then after 12th join Bachelors;course in Economics in Universities like Delhi University, Indian Institute of Economics, Kolkata Univ, Jadavpur Univ, BHU and other top universities in the country or go for the 5 year integrated course in the same. ORyou can go for bachelors course in ISI, Kolkata/ Bangalore. Then also go for PG in the same.

If your ambitions are to study from the top universities in the world, I would suggest to set for GRE/GMAT and go to study from universities like Cambridge, Harvard, California, London School of Economics, for PG studies and subsequently for PhD./Research from the same. If willing to join, IES/Banking/IAS etc, than start preparing from the final year of your UG course, crack the exam/interview and join the services.&

So here, you are the best person first; to choose your career from the above given choices. I hope your query is somehow answer and you are relaxed now. For detailed counseling, you may contact the experts from our panel at careerguide.com

    Hello,

Thank You for approaching us at CareerGuide.com!!!

Good to hear that you have identified Economics as your subject of interest. Not many studnets can actually analyse their interest at the school level and appears to be confused. Very few students do spot their interest and I am very glad you are one of them. This well expalins you have a clear focus and I believe you would go in the right direction in your future.

To start with, Economics definitely rules the world's business. So you have definitely chosen the off-beat course. For now, I would advice you to concentrate on your basic level of Economics that you may choose to study at your school level. If your school gives you the opportunity to choose your own favourite subjects, then select Commerce, Maths and Economics as major subjects. If your school has subjects grouped in order then choose the group that has Economics in it. Kindly note, not all schools in India offer Economics at 11th and 12th level and usually Commerce is the default subject offered. It is worth exploring the schools that offer Economics in higher sceondary level and pick the best school among them. So complete your 12th level with good grounds in Economics.

After your schooling, choose to do BA Economics in the following colleges as they are one of the top ones in India. Delhi school of Economics ( econdse.org/), Lady ShriRam college for women Delhi( www.lsr.edu.in/), Indian institute of technology Kharagpur ( www.iitkgp.ac.in/), Jawaharlal Nehru university Delhi ( www.jnu.ac.in/), Indira Gandhi institute of development and research Mumbai ( www.igidr.ac.in/), Indian institute of technology Kanpur ( www.iitk.ac.in/), University of Calcutta ( www.caluniv.ac.in/), Indian institute of technology Delhi ( www.iitd.ac.in/), Madras school of Economics ( www.mse.ac.in/), Tata institute of social sciences ( www.tiss.edu/), Jadhavpur university ( www.jaduniv.edu.in/), Jamia Millia Islamia ( jmi.ac.in/) and Banaras Hindu university ( www.bhu.ac.in/).

Once you are done with your bachelors degree you may choose to do a postgraduate in Economics like the MA Economics or more specialized courses like MA Developmental Economics, Educational economics, Econometrics, Quantitative economics, Food economics, Health economics, Trade economics, Environmental economics and many more. Most often your postgraduate degree electives itself will lead you to choose any of the above specializations. Completing your masters degree you may either choose to do a Doctoral degree like the PhD in Economics or instead prefer to work as an Economist in corporates or government.

Hope the career sketch I have given to you is clear. For now, select the school that offers Economics in class XI and XII and then go ahead with doing the BA Economics from any of the above mentioned schools that stay reputed in the country for its overall ranking and Economics subject ranking. You will be clear on from then. My best wishes to you. Good luck.
