Academics: As mentioned by Dr. Anand, you need to clarify National Eligibility Test for Assistant Professorship and get into academics as research fellow or assistant professor. PhD is desirable for better scope in academics.
Research laboratories: There is ample opportunities to work in research lab or research organizations as microbiologist. Minimum requirement to get job in research organization is masters, however, PhD is highly desirable.
